WPO 2025 Student Competition Co-Winners Ezra Lewis and Hayden Ren

Ezra Lewis, Co-Winner WPO Student Concerto Competition

Ezra Lewis, age 14, has studied piano for nine years. Ezra performed and was interviewed on NPR’s “From the Top” national radio program at age 11. Last summer, he was one of the youngest students accepted to study at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. In prior summers, Ezra studied chamber music at Greenwood. Ezra is a student of Professor Jonathan Bass at the New England Conservatory of Music. He also studies jazz piano with Professor Zahili Gonzalez Zamora at Berklee College of Music. In addition to performing as a solo classical pianist, Ezra is also an accomplished chamber musician, jazz pianist, and composer.

 

Hayden Ren, 17, a senior at Newton North High School, has been studying cello at New England Conservatory (NEC) under Allison Eldredge since the age of eight. She is also currently studying with Blaise Dejardin.

Hayden was the first prize winner of the 2023-2024 NEC Prep Concerto Competition and the 2021 NEC Prep Solo String (Cello) Competition in her age category. She also won the 2025 Boston Civic Symphony Young Artist Concerto Competition, the 2025 Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra (WPO) Concerto Competition, and the 2024 New England Philharmonic Young Artist Competition. She was the runner-up in the 2023 WPO Concerto Competition and earned second prize in both the 2022 Brockton Symphony Orchestra and the 2025 Quincy Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competitions. In 2025, she received the Grand Prize at the International Antonín Dvořák Classic Music Competition and the second prize of the Gustav Mahler International Cello Competition in Prague. Hayden was also a finalist in the 2025 Boston POP Young Artist Competition.

As a soloist, Hayden has performed with several orchestras, including the New Philharmonia Orchestra, New England Philharmonic, NEC Youth Symphony, Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra, and Wellesley Symphony Orchestra in 2024, as well as the ASMI Chamber Orchestra Italy in 2022. She has performed in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Hatch Memorial Shell, Gilles-Lefebvre Hall, and the Teatro degli Atti in Italy. Hayden has participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Orford Music Academy and the Altschuler Summer Music Institute, studied with Paul Katz, Laurence Lesser, Fred Sherry, Lluis Claret, Matt Haimovitz, and Amid Peled.

As a member of Trio Résonne, Hayden won the first prize in the 2024 IX International  Intensive Performance Seminar (CHIPS). Her Trio Verus was the quarterfinalist of the 52nd Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2025.

Hayden has played cello in the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO) since 2021 and is also a member of the NEC String Chamber Orchestra for the 2025-2026 season. Previously, she was part of the NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and the NEC Youth Symphony. As a member of BPYO, she has regularly performed at Boston Symphony Hall and toured prestigious venues such as the Philharmonie Berlin, the Musikverein Vienna, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and the Rudolfinum Prague in 2024. She has also performed in historic music venues in South Africa in 2023, at Greece in 2022, and at Mexico in 2025.
